MALTA MOUNTAIN BIKE ASSOCIATION LAUNCHES 2017 RACE CALENDAR
Following a short hiatus, the Malta Mountain Bike Association made a welcome return in 2016 offering enthusiasts a full blown calendar of events consisting of a mix of Cross Country and Downhill races. Established in 1998, the Malta Mountain Bike Association resumed its activities following the election of a new committee in 2016.
Cross Country Cycling, the most common discipline of mountain biking, is also an Olympic sport and consists of short lap-based routes on off road terrain. Downhill Mountain Biking is a genre of mountain biking practiced on steep, rough terrain that often features jumps, drops and other forms of obstacles. Both disciplines are deemed to be spectator friendly sports as they offer fast paced action throughout.
“Whilst the Association went through a bit of a quiet period, the new committee worked on developing what had been built in the past. We were pleased to see that last year’s efforts proved to be successful with a good attendance to all races culminating with the National Championships seeing record participation of 40 athletes spread in the three categories” enthused Pierre Zammit Endrich, President of the Association.
Similar to last year, the 2017 races will be held in various scenic yet challenging locations some of which include Wardija, Majjistral, Mizieb and Gnejna. The chosen routes not only depend on the technical aspect of the course’s terrain but also keep in mind accessibility to the general public wishing to enjoy the action.
“Last year we had good attendance from the general public and hope to have a similar response this year – Mountain Bike Racing is very exciting, this is also due to the fact that race loops are kept short so there are no long gaps in the action”, continued Zammit Endrich.
Whilst these races attract some of Malta’s top male and female cyclists, the introduction of the Open category saw quite a good number of newcomers to the sport taking the plunge and experience some adrenaline producing racing.
This year’s race calendar will kick off with a Cross Country Race held in Mizieb on Sunday 29th January. Race starts at 8:00am sharp. Race timing will be done electronically via the ARTTS electronic timing system.
In conjunction with the launch of the 2017 Calendar, the Association also announced its partnership with BDO Malta who will be supporting the Association’s initiatives.
Mark Attard, CEO at BDO Malta said “BDO is pleased to support the Malta Mountain Biking Association, a growing sport here in Malta. This sponsorship is a great fit for our Firm, as it forms part of our vision to give back to people in and out of the office. We strongly believe in promoting cycling as it not only encourages good health but also sees riders of all abilities participating in challenging yet rewarding events.
Apart from BDO Malta, the 2017 Cross Country Series is being supported by Magri Cycles, Carm & Co Ltd (SIS products) and Island Beverages (H20nly). The Downhill league, which kicks off on Saturday 4th March in Wardija, is being supported by Wheel Wizard, Epic No Limits, HSN Signs, Dacoby Chauffeur Service and S-Trek Ltd (Pro Action products).
